All is NOT Fair in Love and War: How Romance and Bullying Jeopardize a Healthy Workplace

In a recent survey, 35% of workers, or an estimated 53.5 million individuals*, report that they have experienced workplace bullying firsthand. While federal law prohibits harassment based on sex (or any other protected status), currently there is no federal law against workplace bullying. Over the past 10 years, however, 21 states have introduced legislation addressing bullying in the workplace.  As of March 2013, nine states had legislation pending to establish anti-bullying laws for the workplace.

By contrast, while an office romance between consenting adults may be a positive development for the two individuals involved, it likewise presents numerous challenges for the employer. For example, an ongoing relationship may lead to claims of favoritism, whereas an office romance gone bad may expose an employer to claims of sexual harassment.

Join us virtually on Friday, May 31, from 9 am – 10 am as attorneys from Jackson Lewis LLP discuss how to manage these challenges to a healthy, productive workplace, including: recognizing workplace bullying and how it differs from harassment;  the business costs of workplace bullying, and what preventive steps can be taken to stop office bullying or office romances from jeopardizing your workplace.
