Legislative Conference
The feedback from the Legislative Conference on April 19th has been overwhelmingly positive. They were thrilled to have Mike Aitken for the whole day. Next year’s legislative conference will be similar to this year with a full day including a meeting and a visit to the State House. Susan Post shared that the feedback she heard was that it was great. It was mentioned on the SHRM website, too.
SHRM Advocacy Team (A-Team)
SHRM’s Advocacy Team (A-Team) is looking for members to join them. If you are interested, please see Charla or Silvia. Silvia discussed the need for advocacy after her visit to the State House. Many of the representatives do not have a lot of information on the bills they are proposing.
By-laws
We discussed the size of the State Council and would need to look at the By-laws prior to make an official change and must be approved by SHRM (send to Susan Post for review/approval). The current limit is set at 18 which allows for Board members for the various CLAs, Chapter Presidents, and officers. If we increased the number, it was suggested to have the Secretary/Treasurer position separated into 2 positions.
Other states have nominating committees to review and propose new members. Nominating committees normally include the officers. Also, some states have committees to address succession planning.
Granite State HR Conference
This was the highest attended conference at 325! Anne and Laurie will co-chair the GSHRC in 2013.
HR Hero
Congratulations to Debra Tuttle – HR Hero!!
Leadership Conference
The Leadership Conference will be held on October 18th at Northeast Delta Dental. The focus will be on best practices for chapters and social media. Please refer to May meeting notes for additional details.
Summit on Work and Family
This summit will be held on October 1st. This is a SHRM signature issue. Charla is on the Task Force on Work and Family, which is a collaborative effort with legislators and UNH. Representative Mary Stuart Gile is a champion of this issue. Lisa Horn, SHRM Senior Government Relations Advisor, is slated to be the key note speaker for this summit. Since NH is a target state, there would be no speaker fee to have Lisa present.
Strategic HR Conference
This will be held October 28th-30th. There is an Early Bird Registration discount and a 25% discount for State Council Members. This conference targets senior level HR professionals all over New England. There was discussion regarding how the State Council will support this conference financially.
Open Board Positions and Announcements
The HRCI position is open. Please see Charla if you know someone who would be interested.
Meetings – Locations
We discussed having meetings in different areas around the state to accommodate all of our members. If you are interested in hosting a meeting, please see Charla.
Strategy Session
This meeting included a strategy session including a SWOT Analysis.
Membership Advisory Council (MAC) - Ginny
Ginny Champney called in with information on the MAC. SHRM has created the MAC which has 5 representatives across the country. Ginny is the Northeast Regional representative. Ginny thanked everyone for completing the survey and congratulated the chapters in NH. 2 NH Chapters reached superstar status!
Video - They finalized a video for State Councils and Chapters to increase membership and volunteering. It is currently at 7 minutes and they plan to cut it down to 3 minutes for chapters to be able to show at meetings.
HR Competencies - In late 2010, the HR Competencies were updated. SHRM National can take self assessments to see where HR professionals fall under the new competencies. They estimate the test will be less than $100.
Diversity Inclusion - There are 3 standards for Diversity Inclusion: 1. Job description for top diversity person in the organization, 2. Metrics – measure how effective a diversity program is (still working on metrics) 3. What it means to have a diversity program (includes great guidelines).
Global Cultural Program – This program assists HR Professionals with what they need to know if they plan to work with people in other countries.
Flexible Workplace Initiatives – This is an initiative in the works including a “bible” which will be released as an eBook first, followed by hard copy. There have been 23 case studies and are working on industry specific information.
Survey Results
The survey results showed that people thing the SHRM website is cumbersome. SHRM recognizes that and has made incremental design updates. It was originally made for browsers, but most people use it when they are looking for an answer and need to find it quickly.
They are working on more technology including apps for HR news and download of HR magazine. HR Talk was very popular, but HR Connect has not been getting as much traffic. Ecommerce is in progress to make it easier for members to enroll and renew.
SHRM Updates - Susan
We were pleased that Susan Post was available to join us in person for the meeting!
New DVDs will be available by early fall including an updated Employee Engagement video and Social Media. Others in process are on corporate responsibility, performance management, and ethical workplace culture.
There is an effort by SHRM to set standards for HR professionals. Some initiatives include standardized metrics (ex. cost per hire).
Director Elect – Silvia
The 2011 SHAPE plan has been submitted and it appears that we will qualify for Silver. Initiatives included membership drive, student chapters, government affairs, diversity, and ESGR.
2012 Initiatives
North Country Chapter
Claire is spearheading this effort and scheduled a call with Susan Post and members of Concord and SHRA to discuss next steps. Quite a few of the people Claire has been talking to are SHRM members. They are looking for local programs and possibility be a satellite affiliate to Concord or SHRA. There are approximately 75 people interested from various areas. One issue is that it is difficult to replace the networking at meetings if they attend meetings electronically. They are determining how to gather the group of people. SHRM will need to get approval from NEHRA before moving forward. All those who responded were willing to travel and they are looking to find places to have meetings and where they will capture the most people. Granite State College is willing to host meetings. It was suggested that people meet in groups if they are not able to all meet in one place. Depending on the technology, it could be effective to do web conferencing. Hospitals generally have the technology needed and may be willing to help.
Diversity
No 2 people define diversity in the same way. John plans to attend various chapter meetings to talk about diversity. He is working with Maine to develop something similar to their Diversity Hiring Coalition in order to implement diversity in hiring. One of the main problems that organizations face is not defining it too broadly. He is hoping to reach out to businesses to talk about different diversity issues and help to identify what area in diversity they want to focus on.
Senior HR Professionals
Silvia is working to develop a group of Senior HR professionals. CT formed a group years ago that was similar. Lee Hecht Harrison had an event which was held at Stonyfield Farms. Many of the senior professionals are At Large Members.
Chapter Relevance
Increasing the relevance of the State Council to the Chapters is another initiative. The State Council is hoping to reach out to the Presidents and Vice Presidents to see what they need from the State Council and how to strengthen the relationship between the State Council and the local Chapters. State Council members could attend Chapter meetings and share information about the State Council to raise awareness about the State Council and what expertise/resources are available. The State Council members working with the CLA Chapter chairs is a great way to share resources and expertise across the chapters.
Workforce Readiness
Workforce Readiness is partnering with the State Department of Education with regard to hiring youth. They are focusing on providing 4 weeks of training which would include soft skills and a test for certification.

Website – Amy
At the May meeting, Amy discussed that there is a feature we are not using which would allow members to register online and mass emails could go out directly from the website. Information could be collected from the local chapters and we could have a private members only area. You can also join from the homepage of our website. The website could be used to assist chapters by announcing meetings. There would need to be a statement regarding non-solicitation. Everyone liked the idea of using these features of the website. Amy will do further research on this and will report back.
