General:  HR Professionals are often the members of an organization who can best spot irregularities in an employee’s behavior. In addition, they are frequently the “people advocates” in the organization, looking out for everyone’s welfare. This training will enable chapter members to become more aware of those irregularities that may be signs of high risk behaviors, and warnings of self-destructive inclinations.

HR Learning objectives:

*Understand the scope of suicide occurrences nationwide, in NH among the general population and among veterans and Guard members and Reservists

*As an HR Professional, know what high risk behaviors and warning signs to look for, know what protective actions to take, and understand resources available to include follow-on trainings

Format:     1.5 hours of information and interactive presentation, to include role playing. With an additional 1.5 hours, an HBO video about the National Crisis Prevention Center (Veteran and National Suicide Prevention Hotline) may be shown and discussed

The presenters will offer background information and interact with members of the audience. The presentation will follow the acronym the VA uses, “SAVE”, and the presentation used for working with communities. A modified slide set will be used that speaks appropriately to the civilian/HR/business community

S – signs of suicidal thinking should be recognized
A – ask the most important question
V – validate the person’s  experience
E – encourage treatment and Expedite getting help

This presentation will be made available to all NH SHRM chapters as a minimum during calendar year 2016-2017 and in support of a strategic initiative of the NH State HR Council.

Presenter/Facilitators:

Loren Haberski, LICSW and Suicide Prevention Coordinator, Manchester VA Medical Center

   Loren Haberski is an independently licensed social worker. She is currently

   the Suicide Prevention Coordinator at the Manchester VA Medical Center.  Loren has also worked as the psychotherapy supervisor and a substance abuse

   clinician at the Manchester VAMC. Loren has worked at the VA since April  2009. Prior to that, she was a school and community based clinician at SMHC

   in  the children's department, specializing in substance abuse and justice    involved youth. Loren has also worked in Lawrence MA as a community based

   clinician, working primarily with substance abuse and justice involved clients. 

    Loren earned her MSW from UNH in 2005.

            Dale Garrow, NH National Guard Suicide Prevention Program Manager (SPPM)

Dale is retired after over 36 years of service with the NH Army National Guard, and  deployed twice during that time. He served as Senior Human Resources NCO with a Field Artillery Battalion for over 2 years, then became the first Active Guard Reserve SPPM for the NHARNG.  One of his main reasons for accepting this position was personal.  Over twenty years ago his sister nearly lost her daughter to an attempt to suicide.  He remembered the horrors of her pain and anguish of not seeing the signs of her daughter’s warning signs and he didn’t want anyone to have to feel that anguish if he could help it.

Dale is a certified Master Trainer for the Applied Skills Suicide Intervention Training (ASIST) and has taught 16 ASIST workshops to over 210 community and military leadership and professional care providers.  He is also a certified Ask, Care, Escort Suicide Intervention (ACE-SI) trainer (the military’s version of ASIST that the Army National Guard now uses to teach junior and senior leaders suicide intervention skills) and has taught over 460 service members since August 2011.
